Groceries for Seniors is a community based non-profit organization that provides free food to poor, elderly people in San Francisco.
The city has 27,159 seniors whose income level falls below the federal poverty line ( U.S. Census, 2000). Our clients live with the daily threat of hunger. This condition can worsen chronic health problems that can lead to the hospitalization of the senior. Food is a basic human need: without adequate an adequate diet, people cannot fight off disease and infection. Poor elders must choose between purchasing food to stay well or buying medicine to keep from getting sick. Our pantry program distributes nutritious fresh food to approximately 1,188 seniors every week. Without our help, many seniors would go to bed hungry.
